Good afternoon, this is W42ST Lifestyle Editor Sarah Beling with “Make Way For The Weekend” — your curated guide to the best of New York events in one convenient newsletter!

In my opinion, there are two New York Fall Fashion Weeks: the “official one” (too hot to wear a great outfit/also I’m not invited), and the real one — which is, of course, the first week that the temperature dips below 50 on a regular basis. The sweaters! The shoes! The jackets!!! Oh, the jackets (yes, if you’re wondering, my only real religion is layering). It’s like the first day of school except it’s not August so we’re not sweating through that sweater (well, I still sort of am but that’s because I’m generally high-strung). HAPPY MOTHERF****** FALL, Y’ALL! SEE YA OUT THERE!

And before you go — take a second to fill out our annual W42ST reader survey where you can request the kind of stuff you want to see here!!! and enter to win free gift certificates to have dinner at one of Hell’s Kitchen’s many restaurants!! Woot!!!

Have a wonderful weekend ♥️

…when you can only think as far ahead as Monday!

🖼️ hi again, barbie
Just when you thought Barbie-mania was over — she’s baaaaaaaack at the Museum of Arts and Design, where Barbie®: A Cultural Icon, a new exhibition charting the history of the world’s most famous (and sometimes infamous) fashionable figurine through a collection of more than 250 dolls, videos and other artifacts opens October 19! Come on Barbie let’s go party etc!!!

🃏 which card means i’m going to win a tony
Nothing says Halloween in the Theater District like some Broadway Tarot, amirite???? Join renowned tarot practitioner Emily McGill for a “hilariously metaphysical journey” at The Hirschfeld Broadway Tarot Reading Experience October 18 at Stand Up NY, where McGill will “break down life’s mysteries through her bewitching tarot readings, weaving in Broadway archetypes and captivating the audience with intuitive insights” in between sets from a variety of stand up comics. This honestly sounds wild and I need to know more. WHO is on the cards? WHAT will they reveal?? WILL all the jokes I’ve made in this newsletter about the ghost of Stephen Sondheim come back to haunt me??? Let’s find out!!

🖼️ more mystery
According to this Gothamist article, “you should see” Doug Wheeler: Day Night Day, the new light installation now through October 19 at the David Zwirner gallery… “but don’t research it first.” OK I won’t but???? What happens there???? Self-actualization???? Human sacrifice??? People who line up around the block to see it say “You can’t describe it and you can’t replicate it” — which means my nosy ass has to find out more. After all, a light installation exhibit is very Alexsandr Petrovsky coded

🎭 new work alert!!
“After the woman who unites them dies, three people grapple with love, loss, lust… and household chores” in the play, Dirty Laundry showing at the WP Theater now through October 27 — but “meanwhile, a spin cycle of voices pings with questions: Are you still a daughter when your mother dies? Are you still the other woman when the first woman is gone? And maybe more importantly — how do you clean all that Dirty Laundry?” Grab your detergent and loose change and let’s find out!!

🎭 siri’s lament
“Inside a one-room apartment on the outskirts of Seoul, Oliver lives a happily quiet life, listening to jazz records and caring for his favorite plant. But what else is there to do when you’re a Helperbot 3, a robot that has long been retired and considered obsolete? When his fellow Helperbot neighbor Claire asks to borrow his charger, what starts as an awkward encounter leads to a unique friendship, a surprising adventure, and maybe even… love?” This is the logline of Maybe Happy Ending, the brand new musical now on Broadway that all my hippest, most-insidery-theatrefolk friends saw this week and were RAVING about. I don’t always trust reviews LOL but I do trust them so we should go!!! After all, it’s a good idea to get to know the inner lives of our digital assistants before they take over.

🌳🎶 music al fresco
OK it’s supposed to be kind of spectacular weather this Saturday (I mean don’t hold me to it but so far so good!!!!) so why not head to Hudson River Park for the free HONK! Community Celebration October 19 and hear “global brass and percussion traditions, including Japanese Taiko, New Orleans’ Second Line, Brazilian samba reggae and carnival music, Colombian rhythms and jazz” in all-day performances from the HONK! family band, Bloco from da Block, COBU, N’s Horns, La Manga and Batalá NY!

COMMUNITY POST

Hell's Kitchen Visual Arts Cooperative

The Hell’s Kitchen Visual Arts Cooperative invites local visual artists to meet this Sunday (10/21) at Miss Nellie’s at 321 West 44th St (between 8th and 9th) from 5-6 p.m.  Topics will include the potential to lease space in the neighborhood and terms of membership.  Don’t miss this opportunity to participate in something amazing!

🎶 better than all the rest
Missed Adrienne Warren’s Tony-winning performance as Tina Turner on Broadway???? Good news!!! You can pop over to Carnegie Hall to see Warren in Simply the Best: A Tina Turner Tribute October 18, where she’ll perform some of the late rock icon’s greatest hits with the New York Pops AND tickets start at $66. Now that’s simply the best!!!

🎭 curbside appeal
Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright James Ijames (who wrote FAT HAM, or, one of the best plays of 2022 IMHO!!!!) returns to the Public with the premiere of Good Bones now through October 27, in which “a work opportunity to revitalize the blighted neighborhood she grew up in has led Aisha and her chef husband Travis to buy and renovate a charming old house. But as everyone knows, renovation is expensive and stressful — both for buildings and the communities that surround them.” And as they work with a contractor who also grew up in the area, Aisha “is forced to reckon with the choices she’s made to get ahead and the painful, joyful, complicated ghosts that haunt her dreams… and her dream house. ”

🩰 a li’l nj adventure
Looking for a daytrippable activity? Hop the NJ Transit to see Wonderment, an evening of work by the American Repertory Ballet October 18-20 where you can catch everything from part of Swan Lake to a new ballet choreographed by artist in residence Ethan Stiefel (yes, that Ethan Stiefel!!!).

🕺 reasonably early time travel
The folks at Matinee are back with another early-party adventure — The Time Travelers’ Ball, an EDM dance experience happening October 19 at The Stranger, which is apparently the sister club to The Box. As the organizers said of The Stranger “we went a few months ago and our minds were blown. This is seriously one of the most unique nightlife experiences in NYC — both in what the space offers and the creativity of its performances. Our only problem with it was that we had to be out until 4am and were the oldest ones there. Lucky for you, Matinee is solving both of those issues so you can enjoy it at a more reasonable hour w/ a crowd of grown party people.” LOL well that sold me!!

🎭 the perils of copyright law come to life
I think this is officially the Logline of the Week: in Golem Owned a Tropical Smoothie a new musical playing now through November 10 at The Tank, “Golem, a non-copyright infringing creature who owns a non-copyright infringing smoothie shop called Tropical Smoothie in Panama City Beach, Florida. All is going well — until Smeegle, the notorious CEO of the mega-corporate Smoothie Kingdom, threatens to drive him out of business with tax loophole trickery. To save the shop, Golem and his loyal employees (Ian, a high school kid, Gabby, his overachieving older sister, and Kyle, a stoner college dropout) must come up with a plan to raise $60,000 in one week – or maybe five days? It doesn’t really matter. The point is, Golem owned a Tropical Smoothie.” This is truly chaotic and exactly the kind of thing we need to see happening in New York so that we don’t turn into a Corporate Theater Town™!!!

🎤 celebrate filipino american heritage month
Head to Caveat for the Filipino Comedy Festival: Fahm Showcase October 18 — an evening of laughs, games and prizes provided by an all-star lineup of comedians including Kyle Marian, Ria Lina, Dr. Kevin Nadal, Vic Tran, Hayden Arrington, Manolo Moreno, KUKO, Catherine Yeo, Luke Trovese and Aaron Bola!

📚 hk on the page
As someone who’s always keeping an eye out on the book-to-movie pipeline, I have a distinct feeling that Colin Broderick’s Rocky-meets-The Departed-meets-The Godfather novel, Once Upon a Time in Hell’s Kitchen will make its way to screen (and maybe a filming location near you!!). Until then, meet Broderick at his book reading and signing October 23 at Murphy’s Pub!

…for when you need to secure those hot tickets before they sell out!!!

🎤 she’s an icon she’s a legend and she is the moment
Having thoroughly enjoyed my time at PAC (seeing CATS THE JELLICLE BALL!!!!!) I would totally return to check out the venue’s Icons of Culture Festival October 30-November 2, which features performances and talks with everyone from Serena Williams, The Dogist, Questlove, Misty Copeland and Kathleen Turner, to Alanis Morrisette and Michael Imperoli!

🎤 couldn’t help but…
Yes yes I’ve already surpassed my self-imposed weekly SATC reference limit but if you’ll allow me one bonus it’s to recommend that you head to Union Hall for the And Just Like Sex sketch show November 2 where, who knows, maybe they’ll take audience suggestions from freaks like me lol.

🔥 Hot tip
I could say that I went to Copenhagen this spring because I’m trendy and hip but really it was because my husband’s friend was living there lol. But you know what it WAS trendy and hip and ALL OF THE FOOD WAS SO DELICIOUS! Until I can go back I will revel in the news that East Village Danish bakery and wine bar Smør has opened its new Clinton Hill location — so there are even more places in this town to get a real-deal Danish hot dog!!!!
